Jerry Seinfeld (born Jerome Allen Seinfeld on April 29, 1954) is a stand-up comedian, actor and producer. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Jerry is easily best known for his self-named character, Jerry Seinfeld, in the self-named sitcom, Seinfeld, which he also co-created. Jerry appeared as himself in six episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Jerry has created a comedy web series called Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, which first premiered on July 19, 2012.

In 2005, Comedy Central named him the 12th Greatest Stand-up Comedian of All Time.

Career

Early career

Seinfeld developed an interest in stand-up comedy after brief stints in college productions. In 1976, after graduation from Queens College, he tried out at an open-microphone night at New York City's Catch a Rising Star, which led to an appearance in a Rodney Dangerfield HBO (Home Box Office) network TV special. Seinfeld appeared on open mike nights at Budd Friedman's Improv Club while attending Queens College.

In 1979, Jerry had a small recurring role on the sitcom Benson, playing Frankie, a mail delivery boy who had comedy routines that no one wanted to hear. However, Seinfeld was abruptly fired from the show due to creative differences. Jerry has said that he was not actually told he had been fired until he turned up for the read-through session for an episode, and found that there was no script for him.

In May 1981, Seinfeld made a successful appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, impressing Carson and the audience and leading to frequent appearances on that show and others, including Late Night with David Letterman.
