"The Dog" is the fourth episode of Season Three of Seinfeld and the twenty-first episode overall. It aired on October 9, 1991. It was written by Larry David and directed by Tom Cherones.

Jerry meets a guy on a plane who gets sick and Jerry is forced to look after his dog, Farfel, until he gets out of hospital - but when the guy doesn't show up a few days later, Jerry, suspecting the owner is a drunk, begins to lose his patience and threatens to put Farfel into a pound. Elaine tells him to wait one more day and let her stay with the dog. On the day that Elaine is taking care of the dog, the sick guy from the plane comes to pick the dog up.

Meanwhile, since Jerry is never around because he is always taking care of the dog, Elaine and George are forced to spend all their time together, and they realize they have nothing in common without Jerry around, except that they enjoy making fun of him together.

Kramer breaks up with his girlfriend in a dramatic fashion, and tries to get back together with her in the same way.

Notes About Nothing

  • Farfel is actually never seen, but only heard.
  • Elaine, George and Jerry were supposed to see Prognosis Negative when Jerry had to stay home with the dog.
  • When George and Elaine are in the diner talking, she tells George that Jerry's favorite tea is Morning Thunder.

Jerry: I'm telling you, the guy's a drunk. He's probably on a bender.

Elaine: What is a bender anyhow?

Jerry: I don't know. They drink and they bend things at the bar.

Jerry: Great. Two hundred seats on a plane, and I gotta get stuck next to Yukon Jack and his dog, Cujo!

Elaine: Hello? No, who's calling? Oh, my God, the dog guy. Where have you been? Yeah, well, you better pick up your dog tonight or he has humped his last leg.
