"The Pilot, Part 1" is the 23rd episode of Season Four. It is a one-hour episode with "The Pilot, Part 2". It was written by Larry David and was directed by Tom Cherones.

Synopsis for Part 1

Kramer begs Jerry to let him play himself in the pilot for Jerry. Jerry refuses to let him do so because he can't act. Elaine meets Russell at a bar. He tells Elaine about the show, and that he has fallen madly in love with her since they first met in "The Shoes". Back at the apartment, Jerry and George get a call from NBC, saying the pilot is a go.

George has doubts, and had a feeling that God wouldn't let him be famous. The psychiatrist tells him not to worry, but then changes the subject to what appears to be a white discoloration on his lip. He later shows it to Jerry, who can't see it, a cab driver, and, after dodging "Crazy" Joe Davola, several NBC executives.

At the studio, the audition begins. They choose Michael Barth for the role of George, Sandi Robbins for Elaine, and Tom Pepper for Kramer. Tom swipes a box of rasins, leaving George obsessed with the theft (in addition to his lip problem). The real Kramer tries to sneak in as Martin Van Nostrand, but his urge to go to the bathroom backfires his plan. He gets mugged and misses his chance while trying to find a vacant bathroom in the city.

Elaine has problems about the new management at Monk's. With Jerry pointing it out, she realizes that all of the waitresses have equal-sized bosoms.

George goes to the doctor about his lip. The doctor declares a biopsy, which George thinks isn't a good sign.

Jerry and Kramer work with the TV counterparts of Elaine and Kramer, giving their character a background, while Elaine tries to get a job at Monk's. She is rejected, and files a report at the Equal Employee Opportunity Commission.
