"The Wife" is the 81st episode of Seinfeld. It is the 17th episode of season 5 and originally aired March 17, 1994. It is directed by Tom Cherones and written by Peter Mehlman.

Plot[]

Jerry's girlfriend, Meryl (Courteney Cox), poses as his wife in order that she may share in his 25% dry cleaning discount. Jerry has fun with the idea of having a wife, even if it's just to start a sentence. Elaine gets mixed signals from Greg, a prospective boyfriend in whom she is interested. Greg catches George urinating in the shower at the health club, and George fears Greg may report him to management.

Jerry eventually cheats on his "wife" with another woman. Meryl finds out when the other woman's laundry gets mixed in with hers and confronts Jerry. Jerry says he wants a divorce in order to give the other woman the discount. He and Meryl amicably break up. Meanwhile, Kramer is losing sleep because Jerry took his quilt to the cleaner, taking advantage of the discount. Kramer goes to get a tan to impress his girlfriend's family, and ends up falling asleep on the tanning bed.

Greg wants to date a female gym instructor and not Elaine, so Elaine helps George by threatening to report Greg for not wiping off his sweat from the machines if he reports George's urination. Kramer meets his girlfriend's family, who are black, and horrified at Kramer's burned appearance, thinking he is in blackface. The girlfriend's father yells at her, "I thought you said you were bringing a white boy home! I don't see a white boy! I see a damn fool!"
